WELLCOME TO THE ISLAND OF KALYMNOS

Situated between Kos and Leros rises the fourth largest island in the Dodecanese-Kalymnos! Surrounded by other smaller islets-of which, however, only Pserimos & Telendos are inhabited- Kalymnos adorns the Nothern part of Dodecanese islands with it’s mountains landscape. One can find a great variety of herbs such as thyme, sage, thrimbe and oregano, while exploring the Kalymnian slopes. The above also constituie the best ingredients for the production of the famous Kalymnian honey. The island has to display a number of fertile valeys, “Vathi” being the most famous. It is full of citrus orchards for local consumation and export.

Kalymnian Easter, a noisy, heart-warming custom! The two mountains on either side of the valley in which Pothia, our capital is located, are the dynamite thrown from the cliff tops on Easter night! It’s more impressive slight than fireworks, especially when you can feel the generous pressure on your chest! The average “mountain model” dynamite is 3-5 kilos of TNT, sometimes enriched with fertilizer, or wrapped with explosive cord (“instant fuse”) to amplify the effect! And they do it for kicks! Another impressive aspect of this, is the fact that they acquire the stuff from W. W. I I torpedos or sea-mines, or stuff like that, of which there are still many in our waters ! You must have stell balls to be up there in the wind, holding a good 3kg of TNT, lighting it
up and throwing it down the cliff! Not to mention the fact that after a while your hand gets tired and the throwing distancegets smaller and smaller…! There are weirder sports than this though…! People have DIED like this you know…

A motley collection of beaches surrounds the island. Enjoy Kantouni, Linaria, Platis Gialos, Melitsahas, Myrties, Massouri, Emporios, Vlihadia, Telendos, Akti, and many smaller coves where the breaking of the crystal-clear waves is your ideal summer lullaby.
