CHAMPIONS
LEAGUE
Jug DUBROVNIK (CRO),
Olympiakos PIRAEUS (GRE), Telemarket Posillipo NAPLES
(ITA) and VK BECEJ Nis Naftagas (YUG), these are the
four teams qualified for the European Water
Polo Final Four to be played between 18-19 May
2001.
The last day of the Champions League brought again
high excitement in some games of main importance.
In Group Red the Yugoslav Champions of VK BECEJ Nis
Naftagas travelled to Nice and collected the sixth
win of the season qualifying for the finals with
maximum points. Alexandar Sapic proved to be in great
form for the visitors, as he scored half of his teams
total tally, that is six (6) goals.
In Budapest, Ferencvaros and Olympiakos PIRAEUS
played for the last free place of the Final
Four. Encouraged by an enthusiastic crowd hopes
were high for the Hungarians, but finally the team
from Athens saw the dream come true. In a tense game
the teams went level until the third period, a result
still favourable for Ferencvaros, but taking the
initiative Olympiakos scored twice in the last seven
minutes and that was enough for the qualification. It
is the first time that a team from Greece is reaching
the Final Four, thanks especially to an
outstanding performance at the night of Theodoros
Chatzitheodorou (four goals) and Georgos Psichos (three
goals).
In Group Blue the two leaders, Telemarket Posillipo
NAPLES and Jug DUBROVNIK met in an encounter to
decide the final placing in the Group, much important
for the schedule of the final. Backed by 1.500 tifosi
Posillipo took immediate advantage and controlled the
match, finally winning comfortable. The two best
scorers of the game were Francesco Postiglione (Posillipo)
and Alen Boskovic (Jug) with three goals each.
On the last day of the Champions League Dinamo MOSCOW
succeeded the first win of the season, beating
Spandau 04 BERLIN by eight goals to five. Although
with the accounts already closed the two teams played
an enjoyable game, with Alexander Erychov (Dinamo -
four goals), Dmitri Apanasenko (Dinamo - three goals)
and Slawomir Andruskiewicz (Spandau three
goals) entertaining the crowd.
