Almost all cdr media come with a speed rating which represents the maximum
speed media can be recorded at. Sometimes this information is included
in the ATIP information on the cdr disc so that you can't write on it
at higher speeds, but his practice is rarely followed (this is not the
case with cd-rw media, where speed rating is of supreme importance).
A few years ago speed ratings of cdr media used to be important. However,
their importance has been diminished due to technology advance. For example,
you may use 4x media at 8x or higher speeds without any problem. This
depends on the quality of both the recorder and the media.
As a general rule, you can use cdr media at speeds often much higher
than their official speed ratings.
