2. The CD Recorder
2.2. CDR compared to other storage alternatives
Though a number of alternatives does exist, there are a number of factors
that favour cdr:
- Compatibility: No one can imagine a computer without a cd reader.
Creating a cd means that you can read it wherever you go.
- Price: The price of blank media is so low that there is no competition,
while the price of a cd recorder is easily affordable.
- Performance: The speed of modern cd recorders is so high that can
be compared to the speed a cd is read.
- Broad support: Most cd recorders, and especially SCSI models, can
be used under a large number of operating systems, especially under
the many variations of Linux and Unix.
- Reliability: A cd written correctly is virtually indestructible.
If some precautions are taken, a cd is much safer for long term storage
than other means like DATs and Jaz disks.
On the other hand, there are some demands a cd recorder can't cope with.
For example, it can't replace an expensive DAT drive specifically made
for business use, or a magneto-optical drive with superb data capacity
and speed. However, concerning its price and overall advantages, a cd
recorder is the best solution for the average computer user who is willing
to invest some time and learn a few things about cdr operation.
