BitDefender AntiVirus
00:07, Saturday 26 October 2002
SoftwareBitDefender is an antivirus suite which I feel hasn't caught enough attention. It offers many options and capabilities, and, apart the basic antiviral functions, it can provide fullproof antiviral protection.

To start with, the basis of BitDefender is a powerful scanning engine which is constantly updated on a daily basis. While personally I would find that enough, I have often met situations where people need real time protection, and actually this is the case with the majority of computer users. BitDefender provides not just the usual real time scanning of accessed files, but also integrates with mail, instant messaging and IRC. Files found to be infected are moved into a quarantine zone for further processing.

Another valuable addition is the firewall module, which can control access to the internet or to specific IPs and can provide privacy protection. The integration of all these in one package provides ease of use and a unified control panel to cater for a variety of security needs.

Besides the main BitDefender package, SOFTWIN offers a number of free programs which are a must have, including antiviral modules for the most common instant messagers, a DOS version of their antiviral engine (which I use and find it very nice to have), and many fixes for wide spreading viruses and trojans. Keep this in mind, as SOFTWIN often comes with hot fixes for the latest viruses and security dangers.

To sum it all, SOFTWIN offer a very competitive package, but also many free tools which can help you in a moment of need.

PGP 8.0 enters beta
20:28, Friday 11 October 2002
SecurityAfter NAI announced that PGP development will stop, a lot of PGP users were anxious about the future. It looks that PGP development and availability will not be halted, since the long awaited 8 version made its appearance. At PGP site you can download an 8.0 beta for Windows or Apple platform. At the time of writing this there is not a Unix/Linux version, and the beta version expires so that you cannot rely on it in the long term.

Other possible problems? The new version has not been hard-tested yet, concerning security and source code inspection. There have been a few additions, which personally I don't find important for the vast majority of users, but could prove crucial in complex environments. Compatibility with Windows XP has been announced, but again I don't believe that security and XP go together, so this sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Anyway, despite my hesitation towards this new release, what is important is that PGP is still under development and supported.
