Kouremenos beach, which is ideal for windsurfing, because of the constant
strong winds, as many other beautiful beaches, is located just
a few kilometers away from the city.

Six kilometers from Vai is Toplou monastery, one of the richest of Crete. It was built in th 14th century, and it contains two museums with art works from the 17th to 19th century.

The ancient palace of Zakros is also located in the Sitia area, about 50 kilometers away. It was built in 1700BC and destroyed by fire in 1450BC. Within its ruins that exist untill today one can find an old water reservoir, a weal, columns and a storage room.

Besides all those ancient sites, there are numerous traditional greek villages, filled with graphical taverns located close to the town of Sitia.

The wonderful beach and ancient ruins of Erimoupoli are located
one kilometer from Vai.

Erimoupoli was said to be a ancient city named ¡Itanos¢ that was once
flooded by the ocean.

Today remains from the Byzantine age can be found at the bottom of the ocean and on the hill before you reach the beautiful beach that bares the same name.

A five minute walk is needed to reach the square of the Sitia town from Sitia Bay. The town center is rather small and cozy, with palm trees stretching from one side to the other and is filled with small and large shops which provide all services and goods needed. Most of the bars and restaurants are built next to the beach and port, providing a magnificent view to whoever wishes to enjoy some traditional Cretan cuisine or a nice cope of coffee.

One does not need a car for transport within the center, as traditional Greek paths lead you through the city. There is also a museum with findings dating back to 2.500 BC and a castle preserved from the middle-ages, located at higher ground.

The city of Sitia provides also a port and an airport.

The area around the town of Sitia provides a lot of sightseeing, one of the most famous being the palm tree forest of Vai.

 

Vai is located 30 kilometers from Sitia and is the only palm tree forest in the whole of Europe. It spreads for 200 acres and hosts one special breed of palm tree (Phoenix theophrasti) found no where else in the world.

 

The area also provides a parking, a restaurant and a bar located on a wonderful sandy beach filled with palm trees.

Sitia Bay is located at the outskirts of the town of Sitia, facing the beach.
The building was constructed at the end of 2004 and complies with all EU safety regulations.
It comprises of 20 fully furnished studio apartments, with all balconies having view of the attractive beach and sea.

Furniture found in the rooms include a large closet, a large table, chairs for the interior and others for balcony usage.

There are also bathrooms and specially made ramps to provide easy access for people with special needs.
