Lesson 6 Verbs Present Tense 2

The verb ‘to speak’ is shown below. Note that there are alternative verb-endings. In these lessons we will use the versions given first i.e. those endings indicated in red. 

 

μιλάω ή μιλώ

I speak

μιλάς

you speak

μιλάει ή μιλά*

he, she it speaks

μιλάμε ή μιλούμε

we speak

μιλάτε

you speak

μιλάν ή μιλούν

they speak

 

 

 

 

 

 

Other verbs conjugated in the same way include αγαπάω, γελάω, γερνάω, γλεντάω, διψάω,  ζητάω, κολυμπάω, ξεχνάω, πεινάω, περνάω, πονάω, προτιμάω, ρωτάω, τραγουδάω. Note that these verbs end with –άω but you will also see μιλώ, αγαπώ, γελώ etc. Indeed, if you look for them most dictionaries you will find the -ώ version as opposed to the -άω.

 (*Author's note. You will often come across this version and αγαπά, ρωτά, προτιμά etc. Beware, it caught me out when I first came across it!)  

The verb ‘to say’ has the following endings: 

λέω Ι say
λες you say
λέει he, she, it says
λέμε we say
λέτε you say
λένε ή λεν they say

 Other examples - ακούω, κλαίω, πάω, τρώω

 NB The verb ‘to go’ has an alternative form in the present tense as follows:

πηγαίνω I go
πηγαίνεις you go
πηγαίνει he, she, it goes
πηγαίνουμε we go
πηγαίνετε you go
πηγαίνουν they go

 Αnother group of verbs are accented on the final ώ and end as follows:

μπορώ

I can, am able

μπορείς you can
μπορεί he, she it can
μπορούμε we can
μπορείτε you can
μπορούν they can

 Other examples –  οδηγώ, προσπαθώ, συμφωνώ.
