Lesson 31  Translation of a recipe 2. 'Thinking Greek in action'

simmers, stirring 

gently for 5 minutes.  

 

This is my alternative translation. It is written in ‘Think Greek’ so that the word order is 

more or less the same as it is in Greek.

Having finished I am able to directly translate the right-hand column from English into Greek knowing that the word order and the colouring scheme will help me. Νote that the lines of the text have been arranged so that a word in Greek lines up with the corresponding word in English. e.g βρασμού lines up with of boiling.

I often practice my grammar by translating the right-hand column into Greek (writing and speaking at the same time) referring to the left column only if I need to.

Here is another soup preparation for you to translate. (You may prefer not to translate it into 'Think Greek' - I will not be offended!)

Προετοιμασία: Ανακατεύετε το περιεχόμενο του φάκελλου με 1 λίτρο κρύο νερό και το βράζετε. Αφήνετε το να βράσει περίπου 3-5 λεπτά.

Although I’m not a cook, it seems that the soup quality is better if you mix it in cold water before heating. I would also advise simmering after the soup boils! Such are the directions for soup preparation!

One minor grammar point: you may be puzzled that the imperatives used in the first translation (αδειάσετε, χαμηλώστε) are  non-continuous and those in the second (ανακατεύετε, αφήνετε) are continuous. The non-continuous form would seem the most logical one to use but both occur. The second translation indicates that you will be making more of the same kind of soup in the future.

Finally, If you are translating from Greek to English in a written Greek examination, DO NOT submit a 'Think Greek' version. The examiner will fail you miserably. You MUST translate into proper English.
