Participles

Μπήκε στο δωμάτιο γελώντας	He entered the room laughing
Έφυγε από το δωμάτιο κλαίοντας	He left the room crying
Έφτασε τραγουδώντας	She arrived singing
Έφυγε τρώγοντας το μήλο του	He went away eating his apple

The laughing, crying, singing and eating in the above sentences are known as present participles

They usually end in ‘-ing’ when translated into English.

Note that the endings differ according to whether the verb is accented on the last syllable or not.

δουλεύω – δουλεύοντας μιλάω – μιλώντας γράφω - γράφοντας

Diminutives

Below are the diminutives of four nouns.

ο σκύλος	the dog	το σκυλάκι	the little dog
η γάτα	the cat	το γατάκι	the little cat
το τραπέζι	the table	το τραπεζάκι	the little table
το φόρεμα	the dress	το φορεματάκι	the little dress

For the purposes of the translation we are going to make, the above

examples will suffice.

There are other endings apart from those above, which will be dealt with

in a later lesson.

We all have our idiosyncrasies and one of mine is translating recipes written in Greek into English!

The following are instructions from the back of a soup packet:

Σούπα με ντομάτα και ρύζι

Μίγμα για παρασκευή σούπας

Ετοιμασία: αδειάστε το περιεχόμενο από το σακουλάκι σε 3/4 (τρία τέταρτα) του λίτρου νερό που βράζει. Χαμηλώστε τη θερμοκρασία βρασμού ώστε η σούπα να σιγοβράσει , αναδεύοντας ελαφρά για 5 λεπτά.
