Lesson 11.1   Verbs Subjunctive & Future Simple 1

If you look up the verb αγοράζω in the dictionary you will find three of its forms

αγοράζω / να αγοράσω / αγόρασα

You will be familiar first form so we will deal with the second in this lesson and with the third in later lessons

θέλω να αγοράσω ένα αυτοκίνητο means ‘I want to buy a car’

Note that this verb switches endings from –ζω to –σω when it follows να

Here are the rest of the endings:

Do you want to buy..............?

θέλεις να αγοράσεις.............;

He wants to buy.............

θέλει να αγοράσει............

We want to buy........

θέλουμε να αγοράσουμε..............

Do you want to buy.........?

θέλετε να αγοράσετε.............;

They want to buy..........

θέλουν να αγοράσουν

When a verb follows να it changes to the subjunctive form. Loosely speaking the word να means ‘to’ when it is used in the above situation.

The subjunctive form can also follow θα to form the future simple tense of a verb, so with αγοράζω we get:

θα αγοράσω

I will buy

θα αγοράσεις

you will buy

θα αγοράσει

he, she, it will buy

θα αγοράσουμε

we will buy

θα αγοράσετε

you will buy

θα αγοράσουν

they will buy

The subjunctives of verbs ending in –ζω and -νω often end in –σω.

Those with –ύω endings with –ψω.

All the subjunctives of verbs used in the Crosswords are in the dictionary.

Examples of usage are as follows:

I want to read that book θέλω να διαβάσω εκείνο το βιβλίο
Ι will read that book tomorrow θα διαβάσω εκείνο το βιβλίο αύριο
Ι want to cook this food today θέλω να μαγειρέψω αυτό το φαγητό σήμερα
I will cook the food tomorrow θα μαγειρέψω το φαγητό αύριο
I will clean it tomorrow θα το καθαρίσω αύριο

If we examine the last sentence above it implies that it is a one-off event. This is known as the Future Simple tense. If we change the sentence to ‘I will clean it every day’ then the cleaning will take place over and over again and this is called the Future Continuous tense, which we will deal with later.
