Lesson 28 τίποτα, κάτι, κανένας

This lesson is divided into four sections.

 1 τίποτα – nothing, anything

τίποτα on it’s own means ‘nothing’

question:  τι αγόρασες; - what did you buy ?

answer: τίποτα - nothing

2 κάτι – something

3 κανένας - anyone, no one, nobody, anybody, someone.

Notice the endings are similar to ένας, μία, ένα, the words for the number ‘one’

κανείς is a word from the older form of the Greek language but is often used instead of κανένας

NB In this lesson, so as to avoid confusion, we will translate κανένας / κανείς  as  anyone or no one.

When the sentence is not negative it means anyone.

The nominative……….

θέλει κανένας τσάϊ;	does anyone want tea?
μου τηλεφώνησε κανένας;	did anyone telephone me?
υπάρχει κανείς εδώ;	is there anyone here?
θα της μιλήσει κανείς στο πάρτι;	will anyone talk to her at the party;
αν σε ρωτήσει κανείς....	If anyone asks you....

Sentences with δεν give us no one

κανένας δεν μου μίλησε	no one spoke to me
κανείς δεν σε ακούει	no one can hear you
δεν της μίλησε κανείς στο πάρτι	no one spoke to her at the party

κανένας on it’s own means ‘no one’

question: ποιος ήρθε σήμερα; -  who came today?

answer: κανένας – no one

The accusative………

μη στείλεις κανέναν εδώ	don’t send anyone here
Βλέπεις κανένα στο δρόμο;	Do you see anyone in the street?
δεν είδα κανένα	I didn’t see anyone
Δεν αγόρασα τίποτα για κανένα.	I didn’t buy anything for anyone

The genitive…………….

η εφημερίδα αυτή δεν είναι κανενός.	this newspaper isn’t anyone’s
Δεν πήρα κανενός το μολύβι	I didn’t take anyone’s pencil.
κυρίες, αυτή η τσάντα είναι καμιάς;	ladies, is this bag anyone’s?

4 κανένας - ‘any’

υπάρχει κανένα γράμμα για μένα;	is there any letter for me?   literally: it exists any letter for me?
Συνάντησες κανένα κορίτσι στο δρόμο;	Did you meet any girl on the way?
με ζήτησε καμιά γυναίκα;	Did any woman ask for me?
Δεν ξέρω καμιά εταιρεία που πουλάει αυτό το προϊόν	I don’t know any firm which sells this product
ήρθε κανένας Άγγλος εδώ;	did any Englishman come here?
δεν έχω κανένα ενδιαφέρον για το ποδόσφαιρο	I don’t have any interest in football

An important point about word order: Don’t let it worry you! In Greek the order of words is not as rigid as it is in English, as the following pairs of sentences will demonstrate:

δεν έχω κανένα ενδιαφέρον για το ποδόσφαιρο

για το ποδόσφαιρο δεν έχω κανένα ενδιαφέρον

κανένας δεν μου μίλησε

δεν μου μίλησε κανένας

θέλει κανένας τσάϊ;

θέλει τσάϊ κανένας;
