Lesson 24  Three mixed verbs – έρχομαι, κάθομαι, γίνομαι

 

 

These verbs have passive endings in their present tenses but their continuous subjunctives, simple futures and simple pasts have endings like δουλεύω.

 

 

Below is the present tense of έρχομαι – I come, I am coming.

 

 

έρχομαι – I come	ερχόμαστε
έρχεσαι	έρχεστε, ερχόσαστε
έρχεται	έρχονται

 

 

 

 

The subjunctive is as follows:

 

θέλω να έρθω στο πάρτι – I want to come to the party

θέλουμε να έρθουμε στο πάρτι σας – we want to come to your party

 

Τhe subjunctive is often shortened to

 

θέλω να’ρθω στο πάρτι

θέλουμε να’ρθουμε στο πάρτι σας

 

The simple past is ήρθα.

 

ήρθα νωρίς - I came early

ήρθε πιο αργά – she came later

 

The same pattern occurs with κάθομαι – I sit, sit down

 

 

κάθομαι	καθόμαστε
κάθεσαι	κάθεστε, καθόσαστε
κάθεται	κάθονται

 

      and γίνομαι – be, become, turn, go, make, be done, take place, happen

 

γίνομαι - Ι become, get	γινόμαστε
γίνεσαι	γίνεστε, γινόσαστε
γίνεται	γίνονται

 

                   

 

The subjunctives of these verbs are καθίσω and γίνω

 

1 Θέλω να καθίσω κοντά στο παράθυρο – I want to sit near to the window

 

2 Θέλω να γίνω φημισμένος – I want to become famous

 

Τhe simple past can be formed from the subjunctive

 

 

1 Κάθισε κοντά στο παράθυρο – he sat next to the window

 

2 Έγινε φημισμένος – he became famous

 

Remember that the future simple is also formed from the subjunctive, hence

θα έρθω (θα’ρθω) νωρίς	I will come early
θα καθίσω εδώ	I will sit here
θα γίνω φημισμένος	I will become famous
